Many women undergo breast augmentation either after breast cancer surgery or for lifting sagging breasts or just to enlarge breasts and boost their self confidence. However there are also a large number of women apprehensive about undergoing a breast augmentation because of some myths surrounding it.

Myth no. 1: After breast augmentation, everyone will know I wear breast implants.

Fact: This is not true. If done by a professional cosmetic surgeon, a carefully planned and performed breast augmentation will give you lovely and natural looking results. An experienced surgeon will consider your height, weight and natural breast size and shape to ensure your breast implants don’t look unnatural. It is only if the breast implants are placed too high, in front of the breast muscles or are too large for the woman’s chest that they look obvious.

Myth no. 2: You have to replace breast implants every 5 to 10 years.

Fact: It is not required to replace implants unless any problems occur. The most common problem that may occur is the leakage of saline filled implants patients use to get larger breasts. However there are some women who have their implants removed and exchanged after a few years to get even bigger breasts!

Myth no. 3: Your lifestyle and activities will change after breast augmentation.

Fact: This is not true; your surgeon will advise you on how much time you have to take off work after the procedure, and when you can resume normal activities. Once healed, you can gradually return to your normal activities under the guidance of your surgeon.

Myth no. 4: Droopy breasts can be corrected using a large implant.

Fact: Breast augmentation is not sufficient to correct nipples below or at the breast bottom. While implants help increase breast size, you will have to undergo a lift procedure with breast augmentation to develop a well-shaped breast. The type of lift you need will depend on the amount of breast drooping.

Myth no. 5: Implants make your breasts feel unnaturally firm.

Fact: Breast augmentation will never give breasts as soft as natural breasts. However by using implants that are not too large and fit comfortably on the chest wall, vitamin E and implant displacement exercises can help maintain the softness of the breast implants. To get the best results, just follow your surgeon’s directions.
